Sound poor on tuner only (other sources OK)

one channel only

Use left-channel cable to connect right-channel tuner output to right-channel preamp input and vice versa

Sound OK on both channels:

Cable connections are poor or cable is intermittently defective.

Sound poor on other channel:

Cable is defective.

Sound poor on same channel:

Cables OK. Tuner is defective.

CHART ELEVEN

Sound poor on tuner only (other sources OK)

both channels

Check antenna-lead connections. Make sure antenna (or cable service) wires are securely fastened at antenna and at tuner input terminals, and that no strands of wire touch chassis or other terminal.

Sound OK:

Antenna connections were poor.

No improvement:

Put antenna in better location if possible

Sound OK:

Antenna was in poor location.

Sound still poor:

Tuner is defective, or a better antenna is required.
